Today, we have a significant amount of data to dig into, including the DISCUS report on US spirits exports and the latest figures from the UK. I’ve tried to look beyond the headlines you might see in the mainstream press to unpack what these reports actually mean for us. I’ve summarised the most significant data below—and for the record, this analysis is entirely human-made. I’m a total nerd when it comes to market figures, and I couldn’t let an AI have all the fun!

US spirits export beyond the headlines

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) has released its 2025 American spirits exports report, and the figures clearly reflect the heavy impact of tariffs and global trade tensions. Here are the key figures I’ve pulled out for you:

• Global decline: Spirits exports dropped by 3.8% globally.

• The Canada factor: The ban on US spirits in Canada was the single hardest hit to exports, which plummeted by 70% year-on-year across the provinces.

• Whiskey struggles: The whiskey category is suffering the most, losing 19% globally and 35% in the EU.

• Dominant category: Despite the decline, whiskey remains the most exported category by far, even though it recorded its lowest market share in 2025 (45%, worth US$1,075m).

• EU importance: The EU remains the largest single market for US spirits, accounting for 51% of global exports.

• Growth spots: Brazil and the UK saw the most considerable increases in US spirits imports.

• Inventory surge: American whiskey inventory has increased by 126% since 2012 (rising from 475 million to 1,075 million proof gallons).

A little context… While reviewing these figures, it is worth remembering a few broader facts:

• The value of US spirits exports in 2025 was more than five times higher than in 2000 (rising from US$478m to US$2,369m).

• The number of US distillers has grown from fewer than 100 to more than 2,300 today.

• The “zero-for-zero” tariff agreement was crucial in enabling this long-term growth.

UK spirits exports beyond the headlines

The UK Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has released its report on the country’s 2025 trade performance. Whisky remains the crown jewel of UK exports. Here are the most significant highlights for our industry:

• Top spot: Whisky is the UK’s top exporting category, worth £5.5 billion in 2025. This accounts for a 21.48% share of the UK’s total food and drink exports

• Performance: Whisky exports decreased by 0.8% in value and 4.3% in volume.

• European demand: Exports to Europe are worth £1.5bn, making it the UK’s top exported product to the continent with a 10.14% share of all trade (the value of total exports to Europe is UK£14.8b).

• Market share: Europe absorbs more than 27% of UK whisky exports by value (£1.5bn out of £5.5bn).

• Gin figures: UK gin is the tenth largest export category, valued at £602.6m (a 2.34% share of total food and drink exports).

• Gin vs Whisky: Globally, gin is performing better than whisky in terms of growth, but we should be cautious: while volume increased slightly (+0.3%), the 13.7% increase in value is likely heavily influenced by inflation.

A little context:

• The UK’s total food and drink exports reached £25.6bn in 2025.

• Europe remains the UK’s most vital trade partner, representing 62.5% of global exports.

• Ireland and France are the top export markets globally, followed by the US.

Before we dive into the headlines, I have some personal news to share: I have recently taken on the role of managing editor and spirits specialist at Falstaff Italia, the Italian branch of Austria’s oldest gourmet magazine. Falstaff is a leading publication in German-speaking countries and was launched in Italy in November 2024.

Trump’s tariffs back in the spotlight after Supreme Court ruling

One of the biggest stories last week was the US Supreme Court ruling against Trump’s tariffs. In a 6-3 decision, the justices held that the president’s aggressive approach to global tariffs was not permitted under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEP).

The US Department of Agriculture (Usda) has awarded the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (Discus) $1,076,152 via its Market Access Program. The funding is intended to promote American spirits in international markets throughout 2026, specifically targeting Germany, Poland, France, the UK, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. To be eligible, products must be distilled from at least 51% US agricultural raw materials.

Scotch whisky export figures for 2025: a mixed picture

The Scotch Whisky Association (Swa) has released its export data for 2025. While there are signs of stabilization, several challenges remain:

• Total export value: Fell slightly by 0.64% (from £5.4bn in 2024 to £5.36bn in 2025). This is a significant improvement on the 3.7% drop seen the previous year.

• The US market: Volume is down by 15%, largely attributed to the impact of tariffs.

• India: Continues its impressive growth, now ranking as the third-largest market by value.

• The EU: Remains the largest regional market by both value and volume.

• France: While value dropped by 3.6% and volume by 14%, it remains the second-largest export market for Scotch.

According to the financial advisory and restructuring firm Begbies Traynor (Btg), 69 distilleries in Scotland and a further 217 across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are facing financial difficulties.

A note on media literacy: When I started this blog, I promised to occasionally “pull back the curtain” on how industry communication works. This story is a perfect example of a press-office-led news cycle. You will see this exact data appearing across multiple publications simultaneously because it stems from a Btg press release.

By releasing these figures, the firm positions itself as a “thought leader” and a competent partner for businesses in distress. There is nothing inherently wrong with this—it is simply how professional communication works—but it is worth remembering that the “news” is also a marketing tool for the consultancy.

According to IWSR data cited in The Gin Guild’s 2025 Annual Report, gin volumes grew by 1% in the first half of 2025 across the top 20 markets, compared to 4% in 2024.

While Scotch has struggled in the US, gin performed strongly there in 2025, with volumes up 7% and value surging by 23.8% to £100 million. Emerging markets like the Philippines, China, Nigeria, and India are driving growth through traditional gin profiles, with India looking particularly promising following the UK-India trade agreement. Turkey also stands out as a top performer, with value up 28.1%.

French spirits exports fell by 17% in 2025

Figures from the Fédération des Exportateurs de Vins & Spiritueux (Fevs) show that exports of French wine and spirits fell by 8% last year. This was primarily driven by the US market, where sales plummeted by 21% due to tariffs.

Spirits were hit particularly hard, falling 17% in value to €3.7 billion. Exports to China also weighed on the results, dropping by 20%.

DISCUS’s annual economic briefing is out

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) has released its annual report on spirits sales in the US. Total sales value declined by 2.2% in 2025, as a result of weakening consumption and persistent economic pressures. In this context, total sales volumes saw a slight increase of 1.9%, and the industry mantained its market share, reaching 42.4% last year.

The RTD category continues to show the fastest growth. Spirits-based RTDs have doubled their market share since 2021, with premixed cocktails reaching US$3.8 billion in 2025 - an increase of 16.4% year‑on‑year.

Vodka remained the most valuable spirits category last year, with total sales of US$ 7 billion, followed by Tequila/Mezcal (US$6.4 billion), American Whiskey (US$5.1 billion) and RTDs. Cordials reached US$ 2.7 billion.

Bourbon is worth US$10.6 billion and 24,000 jobs to Kentucky

According to the last report by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, Bourbon now contributes US$ 10.6 billion to the State of Kentucky, supporting nearly 24,000 jobs. The use of corn from Kentucky farm families reached an all-time high of 84% in the last years and the industry generates US$372 million in annual state and local tax revenue.

EU and India conclude landmark free trade agreement

On 27 January, the EU and India signed a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Under the deal, India is expected to reduce or eliminate import duties on over 96.6% of EU goods. In return, the EU will reduce tariffs on 99.5% of Indian exports over the next seven years.

The FTA has been welcomed as a start for a broader bi-lateral collaboration between the countries and SpiritsEurope has hailed the agreement as a “true game changer” for the sector, particularly given the long-standing high tariffs on European spirits in the Indian market.

Major spirits firms facing a $22 billion ‘lake’ of unsold stock

According to a report in the Financial Times, five of the world’s largest drinks multinationals—Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Campari, Brown-Forman, and Rémy Cointreau—are currently holding US$22 billion worth of unsold aged spirits. This “spirits glut” is reportedly the result of overproduction following an overestimation of post-pandemic demand.

These figures are usually calculated by analysts who sum up the “inventory” or “maturing stock” values found on the public balance sheets of these five giants. Since whiskey and cognac must age for years, companies keep billions of dollars in “work in progress” on their books. The “glut” occurs when that value grows much faster than actual sales, suggesting they are overproducing for a market that is currently cooling down.

Diageo to close Clynelish visitor centre

Surprisingly, Diageo has announced plans to close the Clynelish visitor centre in the Highlands. This comes despite visitor numbers have more than doubled recently, and following a major multi-million-pound relaunch only four years ago. While the visitor hub is set to close, Diageo confirmed that whisky production at the site will continue as normal.

Tequila exports moderately increased in 2025

The Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) has reported that tequila exports grew by 1,2% in 2025, reaching 407,98 million litres, compared to 402,7 in 2024. Notably, “100% agave tequila” remains the dominant category, accounting for 278.62 million litres of that total—a slight increase on the previous year’s figures-while simple “tequila” exports totaled 129.37 million liters.

Cognac sales slump to 20-year low

Cognac export fell to 141 million bottles in 2025, the lowest level recorded since 2009. According to figures from the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (Bnic), which were revealed by the French publication Sud Ouest, the total value of sales has dropped to €2,2 billion, from the 2021 peak of €3,6 billion (220 million bottles).

To combat the downturn, the UGVC board has approved a reduced yield cap for the 2026 harvest. The trend of “100% agave” lawsuits continues, and this time 818 Tequila is in the spotlight. The company is challenging a class action lawsuit filed against its US parent company, which claims independent laboratory testing contradicts the 100% agave label.

As many of you will recall, we have been tracking this theme for months, notably with the Diageo lawsuits. These claims are becoming increasingly frequent as consumer preference shifts decisively toward pure agave spirits.

Mexican whisky market projected to reach us$1.47 billion by 2034

A study by the IMARC Group suggests the Mexican market for whisky could grow at a compound annual rate (CAGR) of 5.52% between 2026 and 2034. This would see the market rise from 2025’s US$905.2 million to US$1.47 billion.

While these statistics are compelling, I always recommend viewing them as projections rather than certainties—economists, after all, haven’t found a crystal ball just yet.

A note on the data: I noticed the original interview in The Independent cites 2024 figures. It seems my colleagues there didn’t ask what happened in 2025 — a curious omission given the current climate.

It is particularly heartening to see this success given the immense challenges Haitian producers have been facing so far.

A look back at our first eight months

I launched The Spirits Post last April because I felt there was a gap in the market for specific, actionable news for the spirits industry—particularly at a time when the sector was already navigating a volatile international landscape and shifting consumer habits.

For two years prior, I had been curating these insights as the managing editor for a specialist spirits publication in Italy. Unfortunately, I was forced to stop that work due to a series of significant unpaid invoices (a financial struggle I’m still navigating today). However, because I believe that in turbulent times the only way for professionals to stay afloat is to stay informed, I decided to turn my personal daily press review into this public blog.

The response has proven that this something the industry needed. In just eight months, our community has grown from zero to nearly one hundred subscribers across several countries—entirely through word of mouth, without any social media promotion.

Searching for significant news, summarising it in English (which, as you know, is not my mother tongue), and publishing several times a week is an immense amount of work. Seeing this community grow and hearing your insights in my inbox is my biggest reward. Thank you for following.

Mexican tequila exports to Italy set to increase by 9.1% in 2025

According to data released by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT), tequila exports to Italy grew by 9.1% between January and November 2025, consolidating Italy’s position as the eighth-largest global buyer.

A distinctive aspect of the Italian market is its focus on high quality and “100% agave” tequila, which accounts for 84.2% of total imports in 2025, compared to 78.6% in 2024.

Alcohol spending declines despite improved confidence

According to IWSR’s September 2025 Bevtrac research, consumers across 15 markets are prioritising necessities over alcohol, despite improved financial confidence. The proportion of Gen Z who drink alcohol has stabilised at 74% (and is growing), while Millennials recorded their lowest engagement ever at 81%.

On-trade visits declined after a brief 2024 rally, with consumers choosing fewer categories and serves. Higher-income groups continue to trim their budgets, except in India and China. This report includes many other details, though I personally find it a shame there is no direct link to per capita income trends; since I started reading, I’ve had the nagging feeling that people are simply getting poorer.

The UK and South Korea have finalised a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which enhances market access for Scotch whisky, marking Britain’s fourth trade deal of 2025. The FTA provides permanent tariff-free access across 98% of products, and is expected to grow UK services exports by £400 million while legitimising e-contracts and digital technology.

The Scotch Whisky Association welcomed the improvements over the 2019 continuity agreement. Last year, Asia Pacific was Scotch’s most valuable export region at £1.57 billion—down 12.4% from 2023, but up 26.9% from 2019.

The Brazilian Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) has recognised two new Geographical Indications (GIs) related to the production of cachaça from traditional regions in the Northeast and Midwest: Areia, in Paraíba, and Orizona, in Goiás.

Brazil has thus reached a total of 150 recognised national GIs, including 119 Indications of Origin (IO) and 31 Designations of Origin (DO).

Western Australia reformed its liquor licensing system

The Parliament of Western Australia (WA) has reformed the Liquor Control Act 1998. Alcohol can now be served by hotels, taverns, small bars, and producers with or without a meal on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Trading hours on those public holidays and Anzac Day (25 April) will also be extended from 10am to midnight.

San Louis Potosí sets limits to agave harvest

A reform to the Mezcal Law, suggested by Deputy Dulcelina Sánchez de Lira, aims to guarantee that the extraction of agave does not exceed its capacity for natural regeneration, nor compromise the biodiversity of the semi-arid Potosino ecosystem. The initiative seeks to avoid the overexploitation of maguey, specifically the Agave Salmiana species, which predominates in San Luis Potosí.

Puebla sets goal to double mezcal production in six years

Puebla will close the year with a production of one million litres of mezcal, and the goal is to double that figure by the end of the six-year term. Heaven Hill Brands-owned Ocho Tequila has resumed production at its former headquarters, La Alteña (not far from the current Los Alambiques). This will provide more space to expand production while maintaining its quality standards.

Spirits sales in control states declined in October

According to the latest data release by The National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), spirits sales across all control states declined by 0.8% in volumes and by 2.1% in value in October, compared to September.

The NABCA represents 18 states that directly control the distribution and sale of alcohol within their borders: Alabama, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming, along with Montgomery County, Maryland.

Whisky hinders spirits sales in control states

AWA eyes new markets for growth potential

According to an interview released by The American Whiskey Association’s (AWA) president, Michael Bilello to The Spirits Business, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America appear to be the next targets for American whiskey. They all have “rapidly expanding middle-class consumer bases actively seeking premium spirits with depth and authenticity, exactly where American whiskey excels,” he stated. However, Biello noted that there are still some global barriers, like “tariffs, regulatory inconsistencies, labelling mandates and a lack of product recognition in critical markets like India.”

Kentucky-based Luca Mariano Distillery filed for bankruptcy

Following its parent firm LMD Holdings filing for bankruptcy in July, the Danville-based Luca Mariano Distillery is now taking the same steps. The reason appears to be excessive debts owed to suppliers, equipment companies, utilities, and state tax agencies.

Diageo and local union reached agreement over Crown Royal in Ontario

The global firm Diageo have agreed a deal with Unifor, the local union for workers at Crown Royal, after the closure announced in August.

UK rates relief for hospitality to be abolished by April 2026

According to the trade body UKHospitality, on-trade business rates in the UK may jump up by 76% by 2028, if the Government does not introduce a permanently lower tax rate. The business rates relief for hospitality that was introduced during the pandemic is due to be removed in April 2026.

Frost, hail and drought caused a lower production in Armagnac, but national consumption rose in 2024

The Bureau national interprofessionnel de l’armagnac (BNIA) has announced a lower harvest this year, due to adverse weather condition, specifically frost, hail, and summer drought, which reduced the grapes yield. The good news is that consumption in France grew by 8% in 2024.

IWA launches the Irish Whiskey Way

After the success of the Wild Atlantic Way in bringing tourists along Ireland's shores, the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA) has now launched the Irish Whiskey Way to guide spirits tourists across the country. It is an interactive website (Irishwhiskeyway.ie) designed to help users build their own Irish food and drink trails.

In uncertain times for international trade, tourism is an important resource for the Irish whiskey industry. The IWA has recently announced that visitors surpassed 1 million in the year to June 2025, marking a 23% increase compared to the previous year.

RPI inflation increase to alcohol duty to puts further pressure on Scotch whisky industry

The UK Government has announced a Retail Price Index (RPI) increase to alcohol duty. The Government states this decision "balances the important contribution of alcohol producers and the hospitality sector to our culture and economy, with the duty’s role in reducing alcohol harm." How is Single Malt Scotch whisky doing regionally around the world?

While we know that Single Malt Scotch whisky exports have declined dramatically since the surge in 2022, it is interesting to have a look at how the category is performing regionally across different areas of the globe. Asia appears to be the area with the fastest decline.

Diversifying agave products to control overproduction

Between 2015 and 2022 Mexican producers expanded their agave plantations, thanks to a higher price per kilo of the plant. Hectares reached 60,000 in 2024 but the price per kilo plunged to 1-3 pesos. The Mexican Government is advising producers about how agave-derived products can be diversified away from mezcal by producing agave syrup, inuline and agave silage for livestock feed.

French whisky, an extensive feature

With aound 200 producers, but only 2 million bottles per year (less than 1% of the country’s total category consumption), French whisky remains a niche, positioning in the premium segment. However, national consumers are beginning to appreciate it, even ad producers work hard to build their brands.

Campari seeks to sell Averna, Braulio and Zedda Piras

According to market whispers, Campari is seeking buyers for three of its historic Italian liqueur brands: Averna, Braulio, and Zedda Piras. This operation is in line with the company’s ongoing strategy to divest minor brands and focus on more profitable core assets. These three brands generate a combined annual revenue of €80 million.

Updates from Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa

I’ve been following the news closely after the terrible Hurricane Melissa struck the island of Jamaica.

Guyana reports increase in tourists’ arrivals

Rum, waterfalls, and nature appear to be the main reasons for a growing number of tourists choosing Guyana as a holiday destination. Data from the Guyana Tourism Authority show an 18.3% increase in arrivals during the first half of 2025.

Italy and whisky

Bottega launched its first whisky references

Italy-based Prosecco and Grappa producer Bottega has launched its first whiskies onto the market. The first batch of 12,000 bottles has been almost completely sold outside Italy, particularly in Asia.

The local Treviso edition of Corriere della Sera reported the news (no author mentioned). But I’m adding some more details for you: it is not just one whisky; there are three different single malt labels with different ageing profiles: ex-Brunello di Montalcino, ex-Amarone, and ex-Tuscan red wine cask. I’ll be writing about this soon and will keep you posted.

Here is a quick selection of the latest and most significant news mid-week. Let’s begin.

ACSA’s Craft Spirits Data Project 2025 is out

The American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) has just released its 2025 Craft Spirits Data Project, analysing the US craft distilling sector’s performance over the 12 months to August 2025, in partnership with Park Street.

The key figures make for sobering reading:

• The number of active craft distillers in the US has declined by 25.6% (from 3,069 to 2,282).

• The US craft spirits category sales volume has declined by 6.1% year-on-year (down from over 12.7 million 9L cases in 2024). In value terms, sales fell by 3.3% to $7.6 billion.

• The craft spirits market share of total US spirits has decreased to 4.5% by volume.

• Exports of US craft spirits plunged by 20.7% year-on-year (to 142,000 9L cases).

• Employment numbers within the US craft market also declined: 28,628 full-time domestic employees, compared to 29,373 in 2023.

Eyes on Brown-Forman’s new marketing campaign for Jack Daniel’s

Janet Patton pens an interesting article in the Lexington Herald Leader about Brown-Forman’s new global brand campaign for its well-known Tennessee Whiskey. The campaign is considered to be the most expensive in the company’s history and aims to strengthen brand awareness and consumer loyalty by pushing across all channels, from TV and films to social media platforms, YouTube, and non-traditional buying spaces. Flavoured whiskeys form a significant part of the strategy.

Morelos delivers first Designation of Origin certifications

The governor of Morelos, Margarita González Saravia, has presented the first Mezcal de Morelos Designation of Origin certifications, granted by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). The first certificates were awarded to Emma Cazales Quintero of Cazales (Tlaquiltenango) and Alfredo Vargas Sánchez of the brand Xonesco (Palpan, Miacatlán municipality).
The state of Morelos has clearly been pushing hard to promote its agave spirit at local events recently, based on the news updates I’m seeing from Mexico.

IARD issued its October activity update

The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD) has issued an update on its Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) campaigns and activations worldwide over the last month. A quick reminder: this not-for-profit organisation is formed by some of the largest multinational companies in the drinks industry:

Jackie Thomson joins Portintruan after 30 years at Ardbeg

I skipped this news on Monday, but a few people kindly sent me the link in the last couple of days, so here it is: Jackie Thomson has been appointed Visitor Experience Manager at Portintruan, Sukhinder Singh’s Elixir Distillers’ new distillery in Islay, which is due to open in spring 2026.
Jackie leaves her role as Visitor Centre Manager at Ardbeg, where she worked for almost 30 years.

Agaveros 100 Por Ciento de Origen Mexicano (a coalition of Mexican agave farmers) has filed a criminal complaint alleging widespread tequila adulteration, directly naming major retailers and the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT). Remberto Galván Cabrera claims that scientific evidence, based on analysis from a French laboratory, demonstrates serious violations.

Tests carried out at France-based Eurofins Laboratory using SNIF-NMR methods allegedly revealed one tequila contained less than 33% agave-based alcohol, while another exceeded permitted methanol levels by double. The farmers are demanding that President Sheinbaum update tequila standards to address loopholes, specifically requiring mandatory methods for verifying alcohol’s botanical origin. They describe the CRT’s certification process as unreliable and corrupt, representing escalating tensions between traditional farmers and commercial producers.

Canadian whisky up in Ontario’s on-trade in the 12 weeks to 12 July

NIQ’s On-Premise Measurement (OPM) collected data on Canadian whisky sales in Ontario after American whiskey was banned from the shelves of the LCBO liquor stores. The figures refer to a very short period—only 12 weeks before July 12th—which means they are far from establishing a trend yet, but they give a clear idea of the immediate impact: Canadian whisky sales rose by 5% in value year-on-year, while American whiskey plunged by 33%.

LVMH spirits sales declined in first nine months of 2025

While the Wine and Spirits branch of the LVMH group reports 1% organic growth for the third quarter of the year, the total result for the first nine months shows a 4% decline. Hennessy Cognac is one of the reasons.

Hello from the Cognac region!

I’ll be around for a few days more before flying back to Italy. So, why don’t we start from the local news?

Charente, 3.500 hectares to explant

Following the US and China deals on tariffs, the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) has recently announced a “temporary recalibration” of the vineyards in Charente and Charente-Maritime. The plan includes the temporary resting of 7,000 to 10,000 hectares and the uprooting of 3,500 hectares, for which they are seeking financial support from the EU.

I’ve been speaking to producers of all sizes here, and everyone is concerned about the situation. There appears to be a noticeable difference in approach between the younger and older generations. Some experienced producers are particularly worried that this moment of instability might deter young workers, causing them to turn to other sectors. I’m sure this region will endure this setback, waiting for its time to recover. Producers are already working hard to diversify their target markets, and national consumption definitely needs a revival.

Bourbon stock reached record of 16m in Kentucky

According to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA), the number of ageing barrels of Bourbon in Kentucky has hit an all-time high, reaching 16.1 million. The taxes levied on this considerable stock are a significant price to pay for the storage, as they have risen by 27% since 2024 and by 163% over the last five years.

Argentina-based La Alazana Distillery has announced the world’s first single malt matured in Antarctica, called Isla Marambio. It is an eight-year-old whisky matured for five years in Argentina and then transferred to Base Marambio for another three years, where it was aged at temperatures ranging from –35°C to 10°C.

What it feels like to drink a £37,000 whisky?

Olivia Potts writes about tasting the Glenrothes ’51 and shares her thoughts on whiskies bottled to be sold purely as investments. I found it an amusing read, and it reminded me of a special tasting I had at Whisky Live Paris a few weeks ago: I had the chance to taste the Glenlivet 85-year-old released by Gordon & MacPhail (my article for Falstaff Italia is due out in the next few days). I genuinely hope that some of those 125 decanters will actually be opened, because that whisky is truly excellent to enjoy. Someone has to be able to afford it, and sadly, Olivia Potts and I are not in that group! 😉

When is a drink not a drink?

There’s another lovely story I picked up from my trip to the Speyside last spring.

Do you remember that time when the winter was so cold and the snow was so abundant it caused a roof to collapse on a warehouse at The Glenfiddich? A whisky from the salvaged casks was then bottled and released as Snow Phoenix. I met a man who was working at The Glenfiddich at that time, and he told me that a couple of those bottles were signed by the distillery manager. One was given as a present to a girl who had just completed her university studies, and guess what happened? It was drunk at a party, and the bottle was thrown away.

Nothing comparable to the £37,000 Glenrothes, but I find it somehow close and a quite ironic end of the story.

Hello from Charente!

I’m checking the news before starting the second day of my trip into the Cognac region.

Today we have a new data report by Circana, which largely confirms what we already know about alcohol consumption trends. Hopefully, some of the details here can help industry players strategise, rather than just fuel concern.

After that, we’ll move on to other news from across the globe. Let’s dive in.

Circana: 71% of Europeans are reducing alcohol consumption

According to a report by the data research agency Circana, 71% of consumers in Europe are either buying, stocking, or consuming less alcohol, and one-quarter of young people aged between 25 and 35 have stopped buying alcohol altogether.

The total beverage category reached €166 billion (23% of total edible demand) across the EU’s largest markets (France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK), with overall sales growing by 2.1% year-on-year. However, alcoholic beverages saw a 1.8% decrease in value sales to €68 billion, while non-alcoholic beverages grew by 5.1% to €97 billion, with soft drinks, functional blends, and no/low-alcohol choices all on the rise.

Circana: dining out in Europe is being reshaped

I thought you might also be interested in some data about the foodservice sector. Alcohol consumption isn’t the only evolving trend; there is also a wider social trend involving people’s new life patterns which is reshaping foodservice into a more fragmented and dynamic market.

According to Circana’s data, collected across the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, expenditure on solo dining surged by 153% between 2010 and 2019, and now accounts for 15.6% of all full-service restaurant visits. Urban lifestyles and hybrid working are playing an important role in this; just consider that 54% of UK adults now work from home part-time (the highest rate in the EU). Meanwhile, dining driven by social occasions is also on the rise, accounting for 31% of all eating-out visits, but value is a driving factor. Furthermore, food delivery is confirming its position since the pandemic, now accounting for 3.7% of all foodservice visits.

US exports

US spirits exports plunged 85% to Canada in Q2

According to the “American Distilled Spirits Exports 2025 Mid-Year Report” by the Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus), exports of American spirits fell 9% to $593.6 million in Q2 2025. Canada suffered the largest drop, plummeting 85% to just $9.6 million, falling below $10 million for the first time.

Canada, which imported $221 million worth of US spirits in 2024 (making it the second-largest export market), continues to ban American spirits from retail shelves despite the removal of retaliatory tariffs on September 1st. US spirits exports also declined to the EU (down 12%), the UK (down 25%), and Japan (down 23%), with double-digit drops across categories including American whiskey, vodka, and brandy.

The court-appointed receiver for Uncle Nearest is investigating the sale of non-income-producing assets, including its Cognac vineyard Domaine Saint Martin in France, following the company’s $100 million loan default. Receiver Phillip G Young Jr is evaluating properties in Cognac, Martha’s Vineyard, and Tennessee for potential liquidation.

IMPI accelerates geographical indications to strengthen exports

The Mexican government, through the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), is accelerating the registration process for Denominations of Origin for 15 products in order to boost their exports. The aim is to add value to national products by recognising their unique and intrinsic value globally. Mexico currently has 18 Denominations of Origin, including tequila, mezcal, talavera, Chiapas amber, bacanora, and coffees from Veracruz, Puebla, and Chiapas. The 15 geographical indications undergoing registration include artisanal and agri-food goods such as the Lele doll, cecina from Yecapixtla, spheres from Chignahuahuapan, and Mayan chicle.

Réunion distillery turns rum production into green CO₂ source for food industry

The process involves trapping, storing, and purifying the CO₂ that currently escapes during fermentation, then making it available for use in carbonated beverages, food preservation, and freezing applications. The investment is worth over €6 million, with approximately 50% funded by public authorities.

Globally, UK whisky exports decreased by 3.1% in volume, but rose by 1% to £2.5 billion in value. Turkey is emerging as a new target market, showing considerable growth in both volume and value.

Cognac sales hit lowest point since 2009

We know the situation in Charente is difficult. According to the French newspaper La Tribune, global sales of Cognac reached 149 million bottles in the year between August 2024 and August 2025, marking an 8.7% plunge in volume compared to the previous year.

Brazil Faces Methanol Intoxication Cases in São Paulo

There is a rising alert about the risk of contamination from methanol in Brazil, following several severe cases reported in São Paulo last week. Contaminated drinks have sadly caused the death of six people and a total of 22 intoxications. The source of the methanol is currently under investigation by the authorities. Cachaça does not appear to be the reason for the moment, but the alert is high due to previous cases that occurred in the Nineties.

Pisco Partner Content: High Percentages, Low Detail

According to preliminary ProChile data, “exports of Chilean pisco soared by nearly 120% in the UK last year, driven by new partnerships and broader distribution,” says an article by Miona Madsen on The Spirits Business.
Here is the catch: There is no trace of concrete figures in the rest of the article. High percentages are an attractive thing to put in a title but mean nothing without the starting numbers. A simple example: if you had 1 bottle of water last month and now you have 2, you’ve grown by 100%, but it’s still only 2 bottles of water.

UK continues negotiating on US whisky tariffs

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that negotiations to secure a better deal with the US on Scotch whisky tariffs are ongoing.

Trade associations representing distilleries across the UK have delivered an open letter to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, calling on her to support spirits producers with a multi-year duty freeze in November’s Budget. The letter has been signed by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), UK Spirits Alliance (UKSA), the Welsh Whisky Association, the English Whisky Guild, and Drinks Ireland.

UK whisky exports value grew 1%, but volume fell in H1

According to figures released by The Food and Drink Federation (FDF), the country’s food and drink export values reached £12.4 billion ($16.5 billion) in the first half of the year, a 6.8% year-on-year increase. This growth is attributed to a return to growth in the EU and a notable increase in the US, despite the tariffs.
While whisky export revenues increased by 1% to £2.5 billion, volumes fell by 3.1%, and exports to the US plunged by over 3% in both value and volume terms.

French wines and spirits exports reached €16,5 billion in 2024

The French Customs statistics service and the INSEE (Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques) have published a report summarising French wine and spirits exports for the past year. Total export value reached €16.5 billion, of which spirits accounted for €5.2 billion. Cognac alone accounted for €3 billion.
However, the main target markets for French wine and spirits remain the United States and China, which leaves them highly exposed to tariffs and anti-dumping measures, as we have seen recently.

Australian Distilling Ltd, the parent company of Old Young’s, Juniper Society, and Gingin Gin, has appointed voluntary administrators from RSM Australia Partners following financial difficulties. The move comes less than a year after the company raised over $1.36 million through crowdfunding for its Cathedral of Gin venue in Swan Valley, Western Australia.

Nicole Zukowski has been promoted to Chief Supply Chain Officer, taking over from Ingram, with Guillermo Donayre replacing Zukowski in North America.

Diageo veteran Matt Johnson joins William Grant & Sons as US Chief Commercial Officer

William Grant & Sons USA has appointed Matt Johnson as Chief Commercial Officer, with his start date set for September 29th. Johnson began his career at Diageo in 2004 as a merchandising representative in Connecticut and rose through the ranks to become VP of Sales for National Accounts.
