May 19th, 2025: Aperitivo's opportunities and other news
Aperitivo is becoming a key consumption opportunity, the expansion of mezcal appellation, English whisky and more...
Happy Monday everyone!

Today’s first read doesn’t come from a newspaper, but from a well known global drinks data and insight provider, the International Wine and Spirits Research (IWRS).
Many newspapers draw data from its reports, I do too, as it usually provides interesting insights about the market and consumer preferences. Here is what I found interesting in the last days:
Aperitivo is getting increasingly popular
Happy hours and pre-dinner drinks are establishing themselves as key consumption occasion in many market, including the US, UK, Germany and Spain. You can find some more information in this post on IWSR website:
Putting on the spritz: the aperitivo growth opportunity
This is just a preview, of course, the aim of the company is to sell data insights about the drinks industry. But you can find a lot of other information.
This is not encouraging, but interesting as well:
California deep dive: why is spirits consumption falling?
From the pure spirits side,
As many of you may know, a couple of weeks ago we got news from Mexico
Aguascalientes got included into Mezcal Appellation of Origin
Here is the news on the Mexican Government website:
Aguascalientes obtiene Denominación de Origen Mezcal
A couple of days ago I found this article by Pablo Hernández on the Quadratín Oaxaca, about the Canaimez’s (Cámara Nacional de la Industria del Mezcal) point of view on the expansion of Mezcal Appellation.
Rechaza Canaimez ampliación de Denominación de Origen del mezcal
This reminded me of an article I read last February on the Financial Times about Tequila. It is by Madeleine Speed and Christine Murray, who keep an eye on the industry and publish reports periodically.
The tequila party’s over for Mexico’s agave farmers
Expansions are never easy decisions and the markets can be merciless. I’d like to hear your point of view about this.
I’m leaving you with an interview about English whisky today.
Cotswolds Distillery’s Daniel Szor on English whisky
Fiona Holland asked the executive chairman of the distillery about the potential for English whisky and the importance of securing a geographical indication. You can read this interview on JustDrinks:
“This is a game we count in generations” – Cotswolds Distillery on building market for English whisky
That’s all for today.
You might find some news in my next post
I’m thinking of making some changes in the way I build my press review, maybe having a mid-week post on Wednesday and including some company news too.
I usually skip commercial content unless there is a reason to include it, but it might be interesting for some of you.
Looking forward to hearing your point of view on this. Feel free to leave a comment or send me a direct message.
And thank you for reading The Spirits Post ;)
